An injury to C.J. Beathard in the final minutes of a Week 12 game against the Seattle Seahawks meant Jimmy Garoppolo finally made his debut for the San Francisco 49ers.

It ended with a touchdown as time expired in a 24-13 loss.

Garoppolo was acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots in October, but has stayed on the sideline with Beathard in the starting lineup.

Why does this matter? It didn’t matter much in another loss for a 49ers team that fell to 1-10 on Sunday. It also doesn’t say that much about Garoppolo considering it was a single play against a defense that didn’t have much incentive to bring the heat.

But Garoppolo got his feet wet and it could mean it’s time for him to finally take the reins.

Beathard’s injury may keep him out of action, but the team’s future is in Garoppolo’s hands, and the 49ers were going to turn to him eventually. This could be the moment that the era of Garoppolo officially began in San Francisco.
